Private Lessons With Schmooze Productions'
Artistic Director & Acting Coach Dean Chadwick
Dean Chadwick – Co-Founder & Producer /
Artistic Director / Performer / Instructor
When I co-founded Schmooze Productions with my wife Diane in 2000, I dreamed of producing theatrical opportunities for local artists. Now, 16 years later, I find myself surrounded with incredible directors, designers, crew, musicians and performers. Schmooze Productions has a great home at Harbour City Theatre, where we are able to create two incredible shows each season that rely on the talents of hundreds of people. Creating local live theatre really is a dream come true.
As an Artistic Director, I enjoy the creative process. Excitement and exhilaration abound when I start the directorial process. Guiding actors, creating pictures, and developing scenes keep me energized during the rehearsal process. Making choices that will engage, engross and affect the audience is the ultimate goal for success. Challenging actors to step, or leap, outside of their comfort zones is the foundation for interesting theatre. My directorial credits include, but are not limited to: Next to Normal, Rent, La Cage Aux Folles, Spamalot, Fiddler on the Roof, Sweeney Todd, The Full Monty, All The Great Books Abridged, All Grown Up, The Rocky Horror Show (2001, 2011), Oliver, Agnes Of God, and Leading Ladies. I love directing all types of shows including dramas, comedies, musicals, and farces.
I prefer to describe myself as a performer, as apposed to an actor, because there are so many varieties of acting. I love all of it: acting, singing and dancing. I love all the styles of performance too. There is nothing more rewarding as an actor to make choices that affect your fellow performers, your directors and ultimately your audience. My absolute favourite roles include: Dan in Next to Normal, Sweeney Todd, Tevye in Fiddler On The Roof, Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar, Max & Tito in Lend Me A Tenor, and Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz. I’ve developed many others but these ones have a strong hold on my heart.
I am a teacher, both philosophically and practically. I am proud to be an elementary school teacher in my daily life and adore instructing actors in my other passion, theatre. Everyday, I strive to create opportunities for students, both in school and in theatre, to experience something new. In the theatre, I love to guide performers to challenge their artistic choices, build believable and flawed characters, and create performances that embody the entire actor. I look forward to teaching with Jim and Sophie Maher again this season, and I am thrilled to offer private coaching to actors this season as well.
